3D file formats
Every format we open and write, with what each can store. All conversions run in your browser.
STL
STL is the plain triangle-mesh format that nearly every slicer accepts: no colour, no units, just surface geometry.
3MF
3MF is a ZIP of XML files from the 3MF Consortium that keeps units, colours and multiple parts, and slicer projects build on top of it.
OBJ
OBJ is a long-lived text mesh format with UVs and materials in a companion MTL file, supported by almost every 3D tool.
GLB
GLB is the single-file binary form of glTF, the Khronos web and real-time 3D standard, using metres and Y-up.
glTF
glTF 2.0 is the Khronos open standard for runtime 3D: a JSON scene plus binary buffers and image files, in metres with +Y up.
FBX
FBX is Autodesk's proprietary interchange format for meshes, rigs and animation, used heavily in games and film, usually in centimetres.
PLY
PLY is a flexible ASCII or binary format from Stanford that stores vertices, faces and per-vertex colour, common in 3D scanning.
DAE (Collada)
DAE is the COLLADA XML interchange format from Khronos, holding meshes, materials, scene graphs and animation, mostly seen in older pipelines.
STEP
STEP is the ISO 10303 CAD exchange format that stores exact B-rep solids and assemblies, so engineering models move between systems without being meshed.
IGES
IGES is an older neutral CAD format for curves and surfaces, still found in legacy engineering archives and CAM workflows.
AMF
AMF is an XML format standardised as ISO/ASTM 52915 to improve on STL with units, colours, materials and curved patches, but few tools adopted it.
3DS
3DS is the legacy binary mesh format of Autodesk 3D Studio DOS, limited to 65,535 vertices per mesh and 8.3 file names, still seen in old model libraries.
VRML (WRL)
VRML is the 1990s web 3D text format, .wrl, which stores scenes with shapes, colours and textures and still appears in older scans and X3D archives.
G-code
G-code is the list of machine commands a slicer writes for a specific printer: toolpaths and temperatures, not a 3D model.
USDZ
USDZ is Apple and Pixar's uncompressed ZIP package of USD scene data, used for AR Quick Look on iPhone, iPad and Vision Pro.
OFF
OFF is a minimal text mesh format from the Geomview project, listing vertices and polygon faces, popular in geometry research and datasets.
