In short: To convert GLB to USDZ, drop the file on this page, check its size in millimetres in the preview, choose USDZ and download — the conversion runs entirely in your browser, so the file never leaves your device. Colour / materials: kept; Textures: kept; Units stored in file: written as mm → metres; Separate parts: kept.

Why convert GLB to USDZ?

GLB works on the web and on Android, but iPhones and iPads open AR models in USDZ. People convert GLB to USDZ so the same model can be placed in a room from Safari, Messages, Mail or Files with AR Quick Look, which is a common requirement for product pages and portfolio pieces. Geometry, materials and textures are carried over, and since both formats use metres and Y-up, scale and orientation stay consistent without extra steps. PBR materials are mapped to USD's preview surface, so a basic metal or rough look carries over, though very advanced shading may look different. Animations in the GLB are not exported by this converter. The file is created in your browser; the model is not uploaded.

How to convert GLB to USDZ

  1. Drop your GLB file (with its textures, if separate) onto the converter — it opens in your browser, nothing is uploaded.
  2. Check the preview and the dimensions in mm; fix units or the up axis in “Units & orientation” if the size or orientation looks wrong.
  3. Choose USDZ as the output and click Convert. Several files download as one ZIP.

What changes

  • PBR materials are mapped to USD preview surface; some advanced effects are simplified.
  • Textures are packed into the USDZ.
  • Animation, skins and morph targets are not exported.
  • Scale (metres) and Y-up orientation are unchanged.

Tips

  • Test the USDZ on a real iPhone; AR Quick Look is the true check of colours and scale.
  • Keep textures at a sensible size (around 2048 pixels) so the file loads quickly.
  • Keep both the GLB (Android, web) and USDZ (iOS) for a product page that serves everyone.
  • Check the model size in the viewer; AR places it at exactly that size.

About GLB files

GLB is the binary container for glTF 2.0, the format the Khronos Group describes as the JPEG of 3D. One .glb file bundles a JSON scene description, binary mesh buffers and embedded images, so nothing can go missing in transit. The format was designed for efficient delivery and loading on the web, and it is now used by Three.js, Babylon.js, model-viewer, Google Search 3D results, Meta platforms, Unity and Unreal importers, and many marketplaces such as Sketchfab. glTF defines a physically based metallic-roughness material model, a node hierarchy, cameras, skins and animations. Coordinates are in metres with +Y up and a right-handed system. It is excellent for display and game assets, but it is a presentation format rather than a manufacturing one, so print workflows usually convert it first.

About USDZ files

USD, Universal Scene Description, was created at Pixar for film production and released as open source in 2016. USDZ was introduced by Apple and Pixar in 2018 as a single-file, uncompressed and unencrypted zip archive that packs a USD scene with its textures so it can be delivered and displayed without extra files. Apple built USDZ into iOS, iPadOS, macOS and visionOS: tapping a .usdz link in Safari or Messages opens AR Quick Look, where the object can be placed in the room at real-world scale. The file format is aligned with USD's metersPerUnit and upAxis metadata, and uses physically based UsdPreviewSurface materials. Retailers use it for product previews, and the format also appears in Reality Composer, Xcode and Blender's USD exporter. It is a viewing and AR format, so it plays no role in slicing.

3D printing notes

Few slicers open GLB directly, so people convert it to STL or 3MF. The two things to get right are scale and orientation. GLB is metres and Y-up, while slicers expect millimetres and Z-up; a 0.1 m figure becomes a 0.1 mm speck if the numbers are read as millimetres. MeshShift multiplies by 1000 on export to STL or 3MF by default, which you can switch off, and rotates the Y-up axis so the model sits flat on the bed. Game-ready GLB files often have open edges, intersecting parts and thin shells, so run the print check and repair before slicing. Colours can be kept when writing 3MF.

Frequently asked questions

Do textures and colours survive?

Yes, base colour and texture maps are packed into the USDZ. Advanced PBR effects may be simplified to USD's preview surface.

Do I need both GLB and USDZ?

For AR on every device, yes. Android and most web viewers use GLB, while iPhone AR Quick Look needs USDZ. Offering both covers both platforms.

Is this GLB to USDZ converter free and private?

Yes. The conversion runs in your browser with JavaScript and WebAssembly, so your GLB file is never uploaded to a server. There is no sign-up, no watermark and no daily limit; very large files are limited only by your device's memory.
