Why convert STL to USDZ?
USDZ is the format iPhones and iPads open natively in AR Quick Look. Converting STL to USDZ lets you drop a printable design into the room at real size from Safari, Messages, Mail or Files, which is useful for checking whether a bracket, vase or enclosure fits its intended spot before printing. STL has no unit and no colour, so the conversion decides both: MeshShift treats the numbers as millimetres, converts to metres for USDZ and gives the mesh a plain grey material. The model is rotated from Z-up to Y-up so it stands on the floor in AR. The result is geometry only; there are no textures and no animation. Keep the original STL as your print file.
How to convert STL to USDZ
- Drop your STL file onto the converter — it opens in your browser, nothing is uploaded.
- Check the preview and the dimensions in mm; fix units or the up axis in “Units & orientation” if the size or orientation looks wrong.
- Choose USDZ as the output and click Convert. Several files download as one ZIP.
What carries over from STL to USDZ
| STL | USDZ | Result | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Colour / materials | No | Yes | — |
| Textures | No | Yes | — |
| Units stored in file | No | Yes | Written as mm → metres |
| Separate parts | No | Yes | — |
| Usual up axis | Z | Y | Rotated (switchable) |
What changes
- Millimetres become metres so AR shows the true size.
- A plain grey material is added; STL has no colour.
- The model is rotated from Z-up to Y-up.
- No textures, UVs or animations are created.
Tips
- Send the USDZ to your iPhone with AirDrop, Messages or Files and tap it to open AR Quick Look.
- Check the dimension labels first; a wrong STL unit will show a model that is 25 times too large or small.
- Reduce triangle count for very dense scans to keep the file small and AR smooth.
- Use AR to test fit and clearance before spending filament.
About STL files
STL was created by 3D Systems in the late 1980s for its stereolithography machines, and it became the default exchange format for 3D printing. A file describes a surface as a list of triangles, each with three vertices and a facet normal. That is all it contains. There is no header field for units, no colour, no texture and no notion of separate parts. Two flavours exist: ASCII, which is readable text but large, and binary, which spends exactly 50 bytes per triangle after an 80-byte header and a 4-byte triangle count. Binary is what almost every modern tool writes. Because the format is so small and so old, every slicer, CAD package and mesh editor can read it, which is why hobbyists still download most printable models as STL from sites like Printables and Thingiverse.
About USDZ files
USD, Universal Scene Description, was created at Pixar for film production and released as open source in 2016. USDZ was introduced by Apple and Pixar in 2018 as a single-file, uncompressed and unencrypted zip archive that packs a USD scene with its textures so it can be delivered and displayed without extra files. Apple built USDZ into iOS, iPadOS, macOS and visionOS: tapping a .usdz link in Safari or Messages opens AR Quick Look, where the object can be placed in the room at real-world scale. The file format is aligned with USD's metersPerUnit and upAxis metadata, and uses physically based UsdPreviewSurface materials. Retailers use it for product previews, and the format also appears in Reality Composer, Xcode and Blender's USD exporter. It is a viewing and AR format, so it plays no role in slicing.
3D printing notes
STL is still the safest file to hand to a slicer. Bambu Studio, PrusaSlicer, OrcaSlicer, Cura and the resin tools Chitubox and Lychee all import it, and they all treat the numbers as millimetres. The usual problems are scale (a model exported from a metre-based tool arrives 1000 times too small) and meshes that are not watertight, which makes slicers fill or skip regions. MeshShift shows the real dimensions before you convert and can scale from metres automatically. Its print check lists holes, non-manifold edges and flipped normals, and one click rebuilds a closed solid at the same size. If you need colours or several plates in one file, use 3MF instead.
Frequently asked questions
Will the USDZ display at real size?
Yes, if the STL was in millimetres. The converter writes metres, which AR Quick Look uses to place the object at its true size. Check the dimensions shown before converting.
Does the USDZ work on Android?
USDZ is Apple's AR format. For Android and web AR, use GLB instead, which Scene Viewer and most web viewers support.
Is this STL to USDZ converter free and private?
Yes. The conversion runs in your browser with JavaScript and WebAssembly, so your STL file is never uploaded to a server. There is no sign-up, no watermark and no daily limit; very large files are limited only by your device's memory.
