Convert DAE to STL
Free DAE to STL converter that runs in your browser. See real dimensions before you download, and get a watertight, slicer-ready file.
Why convert DAE to STL?
DAE, or Collada, is an older open exchange format still found in SketchUp exports, Google 3D Warehouse downloads, robotics models and some game assets. Slicers cannot read it, so DAE to STL prepares such a model for printing. A DAE file is a scene: it may include several meshes, a node hierarchy, materials, textures, cameras and animation. STL keeps only the triangles, so the scene is flattened into a single mesh with transforms applied. Collada stores its unit and up axis in the file header, and MeshShift uses them, so a model authored in metres or inches should arrive at the right size in millimetres, and Y-up files can be stood upright for printing.
How to convert DAE to STL
- Drop your DAE file (with its textures, if separate) onto the converter — it opens in your browser, nothing is uploaded.
- Check the preview and the dimensions in mm; fix units or the up axis in “Units & orientation” if the size or orientation looks wrong.
- Choose STL as the output (binary is smaller; ASCII is human-readable) and click Convert. Several files download as one ZIP.
What carries over from DAE to STL
| DAE | STL | Result | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Colour / materials | Yes | No | Dropped |
| Textures | Yes | No | Dropped |
| Units stored in file | Yes | No | Numbers in mm |
| Separate parts | Yes | No | Merged into one mesh |
| Usual up axis | Y | Z | Rotated (switchable) |
What changes
- Materials and textures are discarded; STL has geometry only.
- The scene hierarchy and object names are flattened into one mesh.
- Animations, cameras and lights are not exported.
- The unit in the DAE header is converted to millimetres.
Tips
- SketchUp exports often contain duplicate faces and internal geometry; run the print check and repair.
- Models from 3D Warehouse may be surface-only; check the watertight flag in the viewer.
- Remove unwanted parts such as people or furniture in the source program before exporting.
- Check dimensions against the source drawing, especially for architectural models.
About DAE files
COLLADA, short for COLLAborative Design Activity, was started by Sony Computer Entertainment and handed to the Khronos Group, which published it as an open XML standard; it became ISO/PAS 17506. Files use the .dae extension. The goal was a neutral format that let different content-creation tools exchange assets without losing information, so it is broader than a mesh format: it describes geometry, materials and effects, images, cameras, lights, skeletons, skin controllers, animations and even physics. It declares its own unit with a meter attribute and an up_axis setting, which is more than OBJ or STL offer. Because it is verbose XML, files are large, and glTF has since taken over the role of Khronos's recommended runtime format. DAE still turns up in SketchUp downloads, Google Earth content, robotics (ROS) and older game and simulation assets.
About STL files
STL was created by 3D Systems in the late 1980s for its stereolithography machines, and it became the default exchange format for 3D printing. A file describes a surface as a list of triangles, each with three vertices and a facet normal. That is all it contains. There is no header field for units, no colour, no texture and no notion of separate parts. Two flavours exist: ASCII, which is readable text but large, and binary, which spends exactly 50 bytes per triangle after an 80-byte header and a 4-byte triangle count. Binary is what almost every modern tool writes. Because the format is so small and so old, every slicer, CAD package and mesh editor can read it, which is why hobbyists still download most printable models as STL from sites like Printables and Thingiverse.
3D printing notes
STL is still the safest file to hand to a slicer. Bambu Studio, PrusaSlicer, OrcaSlicer, Cura and the resin tools Chitubox and Lychee all import it, and they all treat the numbers as millimetres. The usual problems are scale (a model exported from a metre-based tool arrives 1000 times too small) and meshes that are not watertight, which makes slicers fill or skip regions. MeshShift shows the real dimensions before you convert and can scale from metres automatically. Its print check lists holes, non-manifold edges and flipped normals, and one click rebuilds a closed solid at the same size. If you need colours or several plates in one file, use 3MF instead.
Frequently asked questions
Does DAE to STL keep the colours?
No. STL cannot store materials or textures. For a coloured print, convert to 3MF or OBJ instead.
Why is my SketchUp DAE not printable?
SketchUp models are often made of single surfaces rather than closed solids, with holes and internal faces. The print check can find these and repair them into a closed mesh.
Is this DAE to STL converter free and private?
Yes. The conversion runs in your browser with JavaScript and WebAssembly, so your DAE file is never uploaded to a server. There is no sign-up, no watermark and no daily limit; very large files are limited only by your device's memory.
