About MeshShift

MeshShift is a small, independent toolset for people who 3D print: convert any 3D file, look at it properly, fix it, and — when you don’t have a model yet — make one from a photo.

How the free tools work

Files are parsed and written in your browser with three.js (MIT), our own STL/3MF/STEP writers, OpenCascade via occt-import-js (LGPL-2.1, loaded as a separate WebAssembly file) for STEP and IGES, and manifold-3d (Apache-2.0) for repair and booleans. Nothing is uploaded; there is no server step to wait for.

How AI models become printable

  1. A 3D generation model (served by fal.ai) creates a raw mesh from your photo or text. Raw AI meshes often have holes, inside-out parts, overlapping shells and floating crumbs.
  2. In your browser we rebuild the shape as a signed distance field: inside/outside is decided by a three-axis winding-number vote, so holes and flipped parts don’t matter. manifold-3d turns that field into a guaranteed closed, manifold mesh.
  3. Small loose bits are removed, the bottom is flattened, the template’s base or keyring is added with exact boolean unions, and the whole solid is scaled so its height matches the number you typed.
  4. Finally we check the file the way a slicer reads it — by coordinates, not by index — and only then offer STL and 3MF.
