Convert 3DS to STEP
Free 3DS to STEP converter that runs in your browser. See real dimensions before you download.
How to convert 3DS to STEP
- Drop your 3DS file (with its textures, if separate) onto the converter — it opens in your browser, nothing is uploaded.
- Check the preview and the dimensions in mm; fix units or the up axis in “Units & orientation” if the size or orientation looks wrong.
- Choose STEP as the output and click Convert. Several files download as one ZIP.

About 3DS files
The .3ds format came from 3D Studio for DOS, released by Yost Group in 1990 and later acquired by Autodesk, which turned into 3ds Max. The file is binary and organised as nested chunks, each with an ID and a length, so a reader can skip chunks it does not understand. It stores triangle meshes, materials, lights, cameras and keyframe data. Its age shows in its limits: each mesh can hold at most 65,535 vertices and 65,535 faces because counts are 16-bit, object names are restricted to 8.3-style short names in practice, and texture file names are short as well. It also has no unit field. Despite that, thousands of free models from the 1990s and 2000s were published as 3DS, and many converters, viewers and game tools still read it. Modern 3ds Max saves in its own .max format and exports FBX.
About STEP files
STEP, formally ISO 10303 and known as the Standard for the Exchange of Product model data, has been developed since the 1980s and is the main neutral format for moving CAD models between companies and systems. The usual application protocols are AP203 and AP214 for geometry and assemblies, and AP242 for modern product and manufacturing information. A .step or .stp file is plain text written in the EXPRESS-based Part 21 syntax. Unlike STL, it does not store triangles: it stores boundary representation (B-rep) geometry, meaning exact planes, cylinders, splines and NURBS surfaces joined by edges and faces into solids. That keeps holes perfectly round and dimensions precise, and allows the receiving CAD to keep editing faces. Files can contain assemblies, product structure, colours and units.
3D printing notes
A 3DS model is only ever a starting point for printing. Slicers do not read it, and the files typically come from the game or visualisation era: low-poly meshes, split into many objects because of the vertex cap, with open seams between them. Those seams and overlapping parts need cleanup before they behave as a printable solid. The format records no unit, so check the size against what the model should be and rescale when needed. MeshShift reads 3DS in the browser, shows the dimensions, and converts to STL, 3MF, OBJ or GLB. Use the print check to find loose parts and holes and to rebuild one closed solid. MeshShift does not write 3DS.
Frequently asked questions
Is this 3DS to STEP converter free and private?
Yes. The conversion runs in your browser with JavaScript and WebAssembly, so your 3DS file is never uploaded to a server. There is no sign-up, no watermark and no daily limit; very large files are limited only by your device's memory.
Why are 3DS models limited in size?
The format stores vertex and face counts as 16-bit numbers, so a single mesh cannot exceed 65,535 of either. Larger models are split across several meshes. That cap came from the DOS-era software the format was built for.
What is the difference between STEP and STP?
Nothing in the content. Both extensions hold the same ISO 10303 Part 21 text; .stp exists because older systems limited extensions to three letters. Any program that reads one reads the other, and renaming the file is enough.
